Lyrics

Surprised by April Joy

The winter had been quite mild
And for the fourth time, my baby sister was with child
I had not been present for the previous three
And I prayed that this time God would grant this to me
The snow had all melted, and the season had changed
And we were surprised by April rain
We knew winter was over and spring was to blame
When we were surprised by April rain
We were pleasantly surprised by April rain

The years away were quite long
And because of my sin, many choices had been wrong
I had strived to make up for my iniquity
But Christ showed me grace and paid my penalty
The clouds were rolled back; a new day had begun
And I was surprised by the grace of God’s Son
I knew God would allow me to see this little one
When we were surprised by April sun
We were pleasantly surprised by April sun

The sleep had been quite light
For my sister had expected to give birth that night
But the doctors had sent them back home before three
And shortly after six her pain increased intensely
And we were still wondering if it was a girl or a boy
When we were surprised by April Joy
More precious than gold, barely bigger than a toy
In my hands I caught April Joy
We were pleasantly surprised by April Joy
