Lyrics

Be Strong and Courageous

As a child, she feared the monster that hid underneath her bed
She thought when she fell asleep that he would eat her head
Or the one that appeared when the lights went out
She thought for sure he’d get her before she could shout
But her father gently said
As he sat beside her bed

Refrain
Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous.
Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged
For the Lord your God will be with you
Wherever you go; He will be with you

As a student, she feared failure when she had to take a test
She stayed up all night studying so she could do her best
Sometimes she made herself sick as she approached the day
But her father brought her comfort in his usual way
And this is what he said
As he gently stroked her head (refrain)

As a bride, she feared the unknown when she married her best friend
She knew that her childhood had come to an end
She knew the responsibilities of a mother and a wife
It seemed so much was changing all at once in her life
But her father gently said
As the veil was placed upon her head (refrain)

As a woman, she fears the future without her father here
Through all of life’s trials, he’s always been quite near
Despite all of man’s attempts, he gets weaker by the day
She tries not to look worried, and she asks if they can pray
And this is what he says
As she sits beside his bed (refrain)
